This series of paintings aims to capture both the preciousness and fragility of the peatland landscape, and is inspired by the raised bog on our farm in the west of Ireland. Through the use of colour and symbols the paintings allude to the unique features of the landscape, its atmosphere, preservation of history, and its slow growth yet rapid destruction. The paintings also refer to the importance of peatlands both nationally and globally as efficient carbon sinks, locking carbon away for centuries and reducing the impact of climate change. My aim is to help promote conservation of these precious ecosystems.
Many of the paintings have been exhibited in both solo and selected group exhibitions, including the solo exhibitions ‘not yet saved’ at The Ballinglen Gallery in 2021, and ‘Preservation: Famine, Climate & Peatlands’ at Turlough Park in 2023. Others have been shown in selected group exhibitions, including the group exhibition When We Cease to Understand the World at INTERFACE in Connemara (as part of the 2024 Galway International Arts Festival) curated by Marysia Więckiewicz-Carroll.
